Dear all,

As the year is flying by and December is just around the corner, we would like to give you some updates on our activities at Climanosco.

We are now well into our third Dear2050 program Dear2050: Entangled Forests.

Dear2050 programs are a unique production of Climanosco. They bring a convergence of art and science on a chosen topic of climate change. This year, our focus is on Forests and Climate Change. It relates to forest fires and desertification of course, but it also helps us better understand what types of trees and forests may better survive the future heat and why.

This year’s program presents 16 original art works and 3 original science works (and counting – we’re still accepting science papers). It is funded by SNF and is a collaboration with Prof. C. Grossiord from EPFL.

We have four art & science exhibitions planned over the coming months, for a total of 3 full months of exhibition:

  • 7 December 2023 – 6 January 2024: Dear2050: Entangled Forests exhibition at Kornhausforum, Bern
  • 30 March 2024 – 20 April 2024: Dear2050: Entangled Forests exhibition at Zeughausareal, Uster
  • 26 April 2024 – 10 May 2024: Dear2050: Entangled Forests exhibition at Forum de l’Hôtel de Ville, Lausanne
  • 18 May 2024 – 2 June 2024: Dear2050: Entangled Forests exhibition at Chrämerhuus, Langenthal

Many adjacent events are planned before, during and after these exhibitions. We had two amazing artist residencies at EPFL over the summer.

Stay up-to-date at dear2050.org.

As part of Dear2050: Entangled Forests, we have received exciting science papers on the topic of Forests and Climate Change that, as a member of Climanosco, you will be able to access first-hand here.

These manuscripts will be released to you for discussion in the next days. You will be able to contribute your comments in the dedicated forums at the bottom of each manuscript.

This is the perfect opportunity to learn first-hand about important topics and at the same time help make these papers even better suited for a broader public. The discussions are open to all members and will last for a couple of weeks. We look forward to your feedback.

While we’ve been busy working on this new program, we still haven’t finalized the review of the previous program’s manuscripts. We would like to call everyone to volunteer and read one or two of the following manuscripts and give your comments on them:

Needing Accessibility Reviewers:

  • Estimating when and where human-induced change in ocean water-masses becomes greater than natural variations, By Yona Silvy [link]
  • Beyond curbing emissions – Possible approaches from the ocean to support attainment of global climate goals, By Barbara Neumann et al. [link]
  • Reconstructing the evolution of the Gulf Stream system, by Levke Caesar [link]
  • Microplastics in the oceans: the many ways they can harm coral life, By Cinzia Corinaldesi et al. [link]

Needing Science Reviewers:

  • Overfishing and habitat loss in a warming ocean, By Helen F Yan [link]
  • Beyond curbing emissions – Possible approaches from the ocean to support attainment of global climate goals, By Barbara Neumann [link]
  • Reconstructing the evolution of the Gulf Stream system, by Levke Caesar [link]

As Accessibility Reviewer, you will read a 3-page paper written by a researcher and simply give your comments on how to make it easier to read and understand for someone without a scientific background.

As Science Reviewer, you will simply make sure that the content of the paper is scientifically sound with respect to the cited scientific literature.

Thank you for helping as reviewer – we can’t do this without you.

Finally, our General Assembly 2023 is approaching. We’ll be sending the invitation to all members of the association. If you want to be part of it, please check and if necessary upgrade your membership with Climanosco as a member of the association here (after login). We’re looking for new members to join the board of directors, especially people without a scientific background!

With warmest wishes from your beloved team here in Switzerland
